The reduced cutting diameter issue, however, can be a factor. Virtually every broadhead maker I have spoken with about this topic said the same thing — the bigger hole you can cut in an animal, the better off you are. (This, by the way, is another strong selling point for those mechanical heads with cutting diameters of 2 inches or more.) The smaller hole produces less tissue damage and a leaner the blood trail, which is not a good thing. Most short heads have a cutting diameter between ⅞ and 1⅛ inches, while the average cutting diameter of standard-sized heads is 1⅛ to 11⁄4 inches.

The shorter, more compact ferrules of these new broadheads make them stronger than longer, standard heads. This means little when everything is perfect and the head zips through soft muscle and tissue. When it hits a solid object like bone, however, it becomes a factor. The shorter length of these new heads also allows the manufacturer to make it thicker than a comparable standard-sized head of the same weight, which adds to its strength. The same is true of blades. All things being equal, the shorter heads are the strongest.

Despite my preference for large cutting areas, I decided to give several of these new short heads (Rocket Ultimate Steel 100) a try the last couple seasons. One thing I really like about them is the fact they do fly extremely well. I have used them only on deer-sized game, and so far I have had no problems in terms of quickly letting the air out of anything I have hit.

If you are not a fan of mechanical heads but want a broadhead that will give you the very best accuracy from a fast bow, this new generation of short broadheads deserves your attention. They seem to work very well from fast compounds shooting arrows at speeds of 270 feet per second or more.

Keep in mind the compromises mentioned above, however, particularly the fact that they do not cut as large a hole as many standard-sized replaceable-blade heads. Check them out, then log on to deeranddeerhunting.com and let us know how they worked for you.
